Since 2017, I have supervised over 16 students and associates individually, and in groups. I began my clinical supervision training in two distinct settings: Heart In Balance Counseling Center and Kaiser Permanente. The philosophy and approach to healing looked differently in these different systems, as did the foundations to providing clinical supervision. In 2019, when I became a Co-Director of a Post-Master's Fellowship Training Program at Kaiser Permanente, I attempted to integrate the learnings of holistic health into the medical model, with some success.
As a clinical supervisor, I value mentoring supervisees on their path to becoming therapists. I challenge them to think through clinical situations and ethical dilemmas. I sit with them as they experience the gifts and heaviness of providing psychotherapy, especially to members of our shared communities. Together, we explore what is best for their clients and how the supervisee can show-up authentically, all while working within the legal and ethical bounds of our profession.
Among the different models of clinical supervision, I find the developmental and collaborative models best suit me. In these models, I exercise my authority with great intentionality and responsibility. Also, these models inherently create space for the supervisee to think clinically and critically for themselves, and to meet competency milestones over time.
